Brock Peters Film reviewed Mocking Bird
The real meat and potatoes of this movie from 1961 (check date) that finds a Black man (Brock Peters) charged with raping a White woman in the Ole South and a White liberal lawyer (Gregory Peck) , and hero of some sectors of the City including its' Black People-- defending Him, -- the Real meat and potatoes of this film is never really spoken or revealed. The subject, interfamily rape and incest, was most probably too heinous for the Hollywood of that day and time to deal with directly. The acting in this film, derived from the best-selling novel by Mr. Henry Lee with the same name, is stellar and unforgivingly raw. You don't want the film to end because it is so chilling and interesting. The Way the film, and I am sure the book, wraps and intersperses children and child actors into the plot makes it even more spectacular as such innocence and loss of innocence is also the focal point of this great film. Ms. Lee, who passed recently, was a superb writer who made the Peck / Lawyer character above reproach and a man of high integrity. What I thought would be interesting as well, would be if the racial roles were reversed. When you see the end of this film, you might have to think for a while about what I said at the beginning of this article. A major actor Robert Duvall, finds his early acting role here as Boo Riley. Then you too will be shocked. Look up some stats on child abuse and violent incest in the United States and your shock will turn to sorrow. This is Why just last week I sent a small donation to an anti child abuse agency with a Prayer that they are able to generate other funds and my own well wishes. Read the book, but if you don't have time or want to have an exciting evening, watch the movie as well. (This review needs updating for clarity & fact-checking).
